K-Drama: My Mister
Plot Summary
The male protagonist, Park Dong-hoon, comes from a family with three brothers. The eldest brother, Park Sang-hoon, 49, carries a huge debt after resigning and failing in his entrepreneurial venture. The younger brother, Park Ki-hoon, 43, has struggled for 20 years in the film industry as a low-income assistant director without much success. Their father passed away when Park Dong-hoon was in high school. Despite earning a monthly salary equivalent to 20,000–30,000 RMB, Park Dong-hoon has to take short-term loans every month to care for his mother and brothers. Even when faced with unfair treatment from his superiors and discovering his wife’s affair with his boss, he chooses to endure silently to keep his job.
The female protagonist, Lee Ji-an, lost her parents at a young age and is burdened with massive high-interest debt. Barely graduating from high school, she works various part-time jobs while taking care of her grandmother, who has both speech and mobility impairments, and occasionally suffers beatings from loan sharks.
Despite a 20-year age difference, Lee Ji-an and Park Dong-hoon are able to understand and support each other, forming a mature relationship that transcends societal norms and ultimately allows them to heal one another. They become involved in the same incident due to a bribe. Through eavesdropping, Lee Ji-an happens to witness the kind side of Park Dong-hoon’s life. Park Dong-hoon occasionally encounters Lee Ji-an and her grandmother in moments of need and helps them. Two souls of different ages and genders, through getting to know each other, come to understand themselves, change for the better, and ultimately achieve personal growth.
