Saigō Takamori (also known as Kogichi or Kichinosuke) was born into a poor samurai family in Satsuma. His parents died early, and to help support his family, he began working as an assistant to a government official. However, when he saw people in need, he couldn’t turn a blind eye, and as a result, he gave away his wages and meals to others. The Saigō household became even poorer, and his family often complained, yet even on an empty stomach, Saigō would still run around smiling.

The great lord of the Satsuma domain, Shimazu Nariakira, took a special liking to the honest and straightforward Saigō. Saigō was also deeply impressed by Nariakira's ideas for strengthening the nation and improving the lives of its people. Entrusted with Nariakira’s secret missions, Saigō traveled between Edo and Kyoto, becoming an important figure in Satsuma.

He met and parted with his mentor Nariakira, developed a faint romantic affection with Atsuhime, experienced friendship and conflicts with his companions, married three times, and was exiled twice to remote islands. This is how Saigō spent his complicated youth.

In the southern Ryūbi, this overly simple man came to understand love. Later, he met allies such as Katsu Kaishū and Sakamoto Ryōma and became an unwavering "revolutionary," ultimately contributing to the Meiji Restoration.

He wasn’t good at protecting himself, naive to the point of clumsiness, yet everyone who met him liked him. Around this charismatic man, there were always "troubles full of laughter and love."

He firmly believed that for all people to live happily, Japan must become strong. He loved his family, his homeland, his country, and the people. This man, who gave love selflessly, inspired warmth and affection, which is why everyone called him "Lord Saigō."
